Warm Wax & Tender Fibers

2025

2023

How do memories, places and time carve and echo into the environment surrounding us?

warm wax & tender fibers weaves together natural materials gathered and harvested from my homes garden with surplus traditional batik fabric from Indonesia. Interacting with my cultural background, means to observe in fragments and pieces, fragments and pieces of familiar as well as unfamiliar bits and parts. Navigating a landscape of history, belonging and positioning. The work embodies the interweaving engagement of me sitting and being with my heritage and garden.

Simultaneously, warm wax & tender fibers is also a slow approach into my families history, where my great-grandma was once a pembatik, the work reimagines her touch and delicate hands making the batik through a contemporary lens of cultural flux.

As materials are woven together, histories blend and transform, creating a dialogue between what once was and what has emerged. A quiet interplay of material memory, where each branch, bark and fiber holds echoes of time and transformation and each stroke of hot wax carefully carries cultural history.

The work becomes an artifact of being in a time and place, how we interweave ourselves with its history and environment, as well as how we can exist and rise from fragments of who we are.
